Sean Chiao is President of Asia Pacific at AECOM, overseeing operations of over 13,000 employees from the transportation, facilities, environmental, energy, oil and gas, water and government sectors in Greater China, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand. A Fortune 500 firm, AECOM is ranked as the #1 engineering design firm by revenue in Engineering NewsRecord magazine, and has also been recognized by Fortune magazine as a World’s Most Admired Company.
An acknowledged China expert, Sean is at the forefront of AECOM’s initiatives to develop opportunities related to Chinese expansion abroad, most notably linked to global investment by China’s real estate developers and state-owned enterprises, as well as the One Belt One Road initiative.
As a project leader, Sean has focused on sustainability, resiliency and innovation in his projects, and incorporated them in the development of high density new towns, infrastructure and regeneration of existing urban landscapes. Key award-winning projects include Jinji Lake masterplanning in Suzhou and the concept plan for the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor and its major development nodes, industrial townships and infrastructural works.
An engaging thought leader, Sean currently leads the “Harvard Graduate School of Design – AECOM China’s Studio”, a three-year urban research program that examines complex, emerging issues in urbanism in China’s developing cities. He is also a visiting professor at Tsinghua University.
He is a trustee of the Urban Land Institute and is also a member of the American Institute of Architects and the American Society of Landscape Architects. He holds a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University and a Master of Architecture from University of California, Berkeley.
