Hong Kong – January 21, 2017 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong (AmCham HK)’s Chairman Walter Dias remains robust on Hong Kong’s role to foster positive trade and economic relations in the Asia Pacific Region at his second Inaugural Address.
Acknowledging 2017 begins with “major changes, bringing heightened uncertainty and risk”, Dias stressed the importance to remain engaged and increase understanding between all parties. “Although the U.S. will not ratify the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement, AmCham will continue to push and promote the related goals of free and fair trade in the treaty [Trans-Pacific Partnership], as well as continued U.S. leadership and commitment in the region,” Dias said.
He further outlined the Chamber’s advocacy priorities in 2017 to promote business synergy and integration with the Pearl River Delta along increased connectivity between cities as well as workforce upscaling to meet opportunities in smart city development and Belt & Road – all of which are AmCham’s “continuing interest in encouraging the changes needed to keep the SAR truly competitive,” said Dias.
“AmCham will continue to be the platform for regional and international businesses to access the latest policy directions and plans for Hong Kong and PRD while forging pragmatic relations with these bodies,” he said.
Dias also highlighted that the third year of the Chamber’s five-year strategic plan – AmCham 2020 – will focus on communication and better meeting its members’ future needs. “We will increase the coordination of our advocacy work and activities between the committees to assure a stronger, consistent voice on key issues impacting our members and the community. As our incoming president, Tara Joseph, is a communications expert, we are confident for improved excellence in these areas,” he noted.
Walter Dias is the Managing Director of Greater China and Korea for United Airlines – a major American airline and the world’s largest airlines when measured by the number of destinations.
Dias has close to three decades of experience in the airline industry and deep knowledge in developing the Asia Pacific markets. Some of his accomplishments include the pioneering of the first Hong KongNew York City route in 2001, opening Continental’s (prior to the United-Continental merger) first office in Beijing in 2005, and launching the airline’s second daily non-stop service between China and New York from Shanghai in 2009.
He served as AmCham HK’s Chairman in 2016, and Vice Chairman from 2013 to 2015, succeeding Peter Levesque in leading the largest international chamber in Hong Kong and one of the most dynamic and influential international business organizations in the Asia-Pacific region.
