Environment & Sustainability issues are important to AmCham members, not only because they affect an increasing number of companies with business activities in Hong Kong but also because for many members, Hong Kong is their home.

A more liveable city means not only a better environment for family and friends but also one more likely to attract new talent to live and work here to help grow businesses.

A recent survey of members has shown a wide range of issues which are important in the Environment and Sustainability space, from reducing the carbon footprint of our city and throughout business supply chains, to waste management, single use plastics, air quality and protecting the natural environment.

Green buildings, better urban planning as well as water conservation and energy efficiency are all areas considered important to helping Hong Kong become a smarter Smart City.  Finally, another area of growing importance to Chamber members is ESG reporting.

Our Committee aims not only to support the Chamber and its members to interact with government and other key stakeholders on advocacy issues and policy submissions during the year, but also to engage Chamber members with a series of talks, panels and events on key environmental issues of the day.

Focus areas for 2018 included how businesses and investors are taking account of climate risk, the new challenges for waste management and recycling in Hong Kong, advice for businesses and individuals investing in renewable energy and urban planning for waterfront sites on Victoria Harbour.

Our focus areas for 2019 include setting a longer term carbon reduction target for Hong Kong, ESG reporting/ environmental leadership for companies, environmental issues in the Greater Bay Area, embedded carbon in supply chains, waste management, urban planning for a liveable city and the development of Sustainable Lantau East Lantau Metropolis initiatives.

Chamber members are welcome to join our events and activities and to directly participate in the work of the Committee in planning/running events as well as in framing suggestions for our policy advocacy and engagement work.  If you would like to join – or just contact the Committee to learn more – please get in touch by e‑mailing [email protected], with Environment and Sustainability Committee in the subject line.
