Dr. Ronald (Ron) Roukema is the Interim Head of School of Hong Kong International School. Ron received his BA in History Education from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, on a full scholarship through the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program. He earned his MA in School Administration from East Carolina University in North Carolina and was awarded an Ed.D in Educational Leadership from North Carolina State University with a concentration in curriculum and instruction.


Since joining HKIS in 2014, Dr. Ron Roukema has served as Upper Primary Principal, Provost, and, since 2017, Interim Head of School.


Prior to joining HKIS, Ron served as the Head of School for Marymount International School in Paris, France. Marymount is a private, Catholic, international school offering an American-based curriculum to students from pre-kindergarten through Middle School. Some of Ron's achievements in this position have been leading the development of a new strategic plan, creating a balanced literacy program for K-5 reading and writing, and implementing a new appraisal process for faculty which allowed faculty to pursue both professional and personal goals.


Prior to Marymount, Ron served as a Principal at Shanghai American School's Pudong campus where he was responsible for staffing, curriculum, budgeting, and the day to day operations of the school. Ron was also a Principal in various public schools in Durham, North Carolina for seven years. During that same period, he served as an adjunct professor for Campbell University and a Principal Mentor for Masters of School Administration students at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.


Ron and his wife, Ashley, have three children who are HKIS students.
